01

Tell us what works

Communication preferences may include preferred language, Easy Read, large print, plain text, pictures, signs, communication devices, captions, lip-reading, hearing support, extra processing time, demonstration, interpreter support or involvement of a familiar person.

02

Recording communication needs

The care plan should identify how the person communicates agreement, refusal, discomfort, pain, distress and choice. It should also state what staff should avoid and how information should be provided.

03

Reasonable adjustments

Adjustments can apply to assessments, forms, visits, telephone calls, meetings, complaints, recruitment and documents. We consider what is reasonable and effective rather than expecting the person to solve the barrier alone.

04

Accessible documents

Priority information is provided in clear HTML and accessible downloadable formats. Easy Read documents use plain words, supportive images, a predictable structure and user review where appropriate. An ordinary dense PDF is not relabelled as Easy Read.

05

Interpreters and communication support

Family members can support communication where the person wants this, but they may not be appropriate interpreters for sensitive, legal or complex matters. A professional interpreter or advocate may be needed.

06

Digital and non-digital routes

Visitors can call, request a callback, use an accessible form or request a document in another format. Essential access to care, complaints or safeguarding must not depend on using the website.
