01

Before independent work

Onboarding checks, induction, policy orientation, emergency information and initial training are completed according to the role. Direct-care workers may require shadowing, observed practice and a fit-for-lone-working decision.

02

Core learning

Relevant modules include safeguarding, health and safety, infection prevention, dignity and equality, fire safety, data protection, moving and handling, medication, nutrition, mental capacity and other role-specific subjects.

03

Competency

For higher-risk tasks, staff demonstrate that they understand the instruction, can perform the task safely, know the limits and can record and escalate correctly. Competency is documented and may be time limited.

04

Supervision and reflection

Supervision provides space to discuss practice, wellbeing, concerns, incidents, feedback, development and support needs. It should lead to clear actions rather than being a tick-box conversation.

05

Learning from quality information

Care-note audits, medication audits, complaints, incidents, near misses, feedback and observations can identify individual and team learning. Refresher training may be brought forward when risk requires it.

06

Development and responsibility

Senior, coordination and quality roles require additional skills in leadership, care planning, audit, incident review, mentoring and decision-making. Promotion does not remove the need for role-specific preparation.

07

When training is not enough

If a person remains unsafe or unable to meet the required standard, duties are restricted and the matter is addressed through support, capability or conduct processes as appropriate.
